WOMEN around the country are set to get a chance to showcase their comic skills on stage, as a local production Girls Killing It Foundation is embarking on workshops that will be held around the country to tutor women to be standup comedians.

The project is a brainchild of Taffia Keight, Tariro NeGitare and Nelsy Ncube, the wife of Carl Joshua Ncube.

Comedy in Zimbabwe is dominated by men and this will be an opportunity to have the female side of comic relief on stage.

In an interview with Sunday Leisure, Nelsy Ncube said it was time to get more women involved in comedy genre.

She said they will hold workshops around the country that will impart women with comedy skills.

“There are not many women involved in comedy in Zimbabwe and I believe it’s time we include them.

“They are always making excuses yet men just get on with it,” she said.

Recently Umahlekisa Comedy club founding member Ntando “Van” Moyo bemoaned the shortage of women in comedy.

Nelsy said the biggest comedy Clubs in South Africa such as Goliath and Goliath, Cape Town Comedy Club have been successfully run by women and it is possible to have the same in Zimbabwe.

“I am sure you have seen that biggest comedy clubs in South Africa are run by women, and we can also do the same. People are curious to hear what women have to say on stage. We have internationals keen to come on board, although we are still yet to confirm,” she said.

So far, the only well-known Zimbabwean female standup comedian is Nomsa D from Umahlekisa Comedy Club.

“I believe it is time for us to have our own Anne Kansimee’s and Tumi Morake’s. I manage a successful male comedian and I am sure my skills will also contribute to the growth of the Foundation,” said Nesly.
