adminJOHANNESBURG. — Stanley Sono, for many years one of the leading figures in South African boxing, has died. Known as a man who did everything in amateur and professional boxing, except getting into the ring and throwing punches, Sono was a trainer, referee, judge, time-keeper and board member in both the amateur and professional codes. He died at his home in Dobsonville near Johannesburg on Saturday after a long illness. He was 78.
Sono, who was born on August 5 1936, spent years training amateurs when he was a young man.
He received Springbok colours as a trainer in 1978 and held various positions in the SA Boxing Federation and SA Amateur Boxing Association. — Supersport.com
