Star FM Breakfast Club rocks!

So when Noku “Blackbird” Mvundla, the producer/presenter of the Breakfast Club, called me to be the guest I didn’t hesitate since this was my debut on radio.

I was so excited and I didn’t know how it feels like behind the microphone, worse still to be interviewed. For the past decade or so since I became a journalist I have been in the habit of bombarding questions and this time I was on the receiving end.

So on that day the lovely Blackbird told me in no uncertain terms that I shouldn’t ask any questions and I agreed.
Like everybody else, I filled up a form giving the time I was going on air and the person who had invited me. I was told this was the security procedure. After me there was the veteran journalist Tommy Sithole, former Editor of The Herald.

So the Breakfast Club had an all-star cast from the charismatic Comfort Mbofana to the classy Bongai Zamchiya and the dynamite Blackbird. I hate to say it, but dynamite comes in small packages.

Radio presentation is always fast paced with little time to waste and while Tommy was being served with a cup of coffee, Comfort requested that I join them as they went about their business.

This was the perfect time for me to settle down and get acquainted with the studio.
Inside the studio, it felt a lot like my car, quality music, leather seats and full air-conditioning.
It was all the more exciting chatting to Comfort and Bongai, the guys I have known since way back.

And as for Blackbird, I have always known her as one of the talented female rappers around. In short, I was surrounded by familiar faces. Like most international radio stations that I have been exposed to, Star FM is way up there and no wonder, Breakfast Club is one of the most popular shows. The presenters simply complement each other and while Comfort will be behind the controls, Bongai will be busy on his laptop and Blackbird does everything including tying the loose ends.

But when it comes out on radio it sounds like a whole package and each second you get to learn something new.
One good thing about the presenters is that they are quite resourceful and infortainment is right on their fingertips. I thoroughly enjoyed it when we reviewed music. For once, it made me feel like I was on Idols.

As is always the case, Blackbird was the most generous of the three. We joked and laughed a lot as if nobody was listening, I guess that’s the experience of being on radio. Judging from the number of commercials during Breakfast Club it was easy to see why Star FM is rocking big time. I wasn’t surprised that soon after the show, my phone was inundated with calls from friends and colleagues who had tuned in to the programme.

It was encouraging to note that the good old days of listening to radio are back and with Star FM trending the lot, it doesn’t get any better than this. Breakfast Club is on air everyday of the week starting at 6am to 9am.
