Star FM elevates dancehall

10pm).

The show’s presenters – Garry “DJ Garry B” Chiwala and Simbarashe “Godfatha Templeman” Maphosa – were ecstatic about the development, saying it would only translate to an even bigger platform to uplift the genre.

“Our growth has been incredible and from the time the show started, massive talent has been unearthed from the ghettos. The feedback that we get is overwhelming and only last week, our Whatsapp social network crushed due to the busy activity during the show,” said GodfathaTempleman.

He highlighted the roles that the DJs have played on the show stressing that they have played a role in commercialising local dancehall. He spoke of how a platform has been created through the show for artistes to network with stakeholders.

“In the past, artistes in the sector had been isolated,  but through the show we have seen unions that have resulted in great collaborations. Among these are the likes of Guspy Warrior and Freeman who have produced good music,” he said.

Godfatha, who is known for being jovial on his shows, took the time to explain his chemistry with renowned selector, Garry B. “Our passion for music brought us together over five years ago, because of that vibe we have interesting and lively shows. Just like me, he has an ear for good music and he is able to identify raw talent that we nurture,” he said.

Garry B also spoke on the success of the show that he said was the most popular dancehall show on radio.
“In the past year, we have managed to brand Zim dancehall, but the future sees us striving to sustain that product that is proudly ours. We have come so far, from the days where only Winky D and a handful of artistes where the only known artistes in the sector, fast forward to today, raw and even bigger names have been untapped through our show,” he said.

Garry B, who is revered as the dancehall professor, has been credited for sharpening artistes through lyrical battles.
Their success story also comes in the form of producer Mockery, who they profiled on their show. The local producer made an instrumental that has been ridden upon by Jamaican artistes Beenie Man, Mr Easy and Konshens.

“We applaud the Star FM bosses for being open minded to ideas such as ours. It is because of that, it has changed the game for Zim dancehall
The Thursday show, dubbed “The Dancehall Remedy”, encapsulates dancehall music from all over the world while the hour-long Friday “Lovers Rock” Show is for the ladies. The traditional Saturday show continues to showcase the youths making it big in the ghettos.
