Star FM, Manica Post stake a claim in Zim market

Zimbabwe Newspapers’ radio arm, Star FM, which is one of the fastest growing radio stations in Africa, has come out tops while The Manica Post is third in the weekly market, according to the Zimbabwe All Media Products Survey (ZAMPS) 2015 results published by the Zimbabwe Advertising Research Foundation on Wednesday this week.

Star FM recorded an emphatic 36 % growth, up from 18 % last year resulting in an upward movement to number one position in the radio space in Zimbabwe. The Manica Post has claimed a 10 percent stake in the weekly market, more than double the 2014 results, where it had less than three percent. Zimpapers publications, The Sunday Mail leads with 38 percent of the readership followed by B-Metro with 14 percent; Kwayedza 9 percent and Sunday News with 6 percent.

In an interview following the announcement of the results, Star FM’s deputy general manager Mr Piwayi Dzuda expressed gratitude towards Zimbabweans and all the stakeholders who have contributed towards the success and growth of the station.

“This is a huge milestone for the company. I want to thank Zimbabweans and the Star FM team, partners, clients as well as our shareholders for making this milestone possible,” he said. Mr Dzuda added: “The real job begins now as we have to keep our feet on the paddle and not slacken because everyone wants to be number one.”

Star FM spokesperson Beatrice Tonhodzayi-Ngondo said there was nothing that tells of a radio station’s success and growth more than the number of people who listen to it. She said the station’s 2015 theme of ‘taking radio to the people’ had endeared brand Star FM to the people and the station would continue with it so that Zimbabwean audiences continued to own their radio station of choice.

She said listeners should continue to look to Star FM for top quality programming and presentation, saying Star FM personalities had won the hearts of the listeners and would continue to do so in the coming year.
