STAR FM’s ROCKSTAR READY TO ROCK AND ROLL

Maria Chigunari

HE is a jack of all trades.

Babongile Sikhonjwa is a well-known figure in the entertainment industry for his diverse skills as a comedian, singer, radio presenter, actor, club/radio DJ, TV producer/presenter and an MC.

Babongile, who is popularly known as the Ndebele Rockstar, has joined the nation’s leading radio station, Star FM, as the new After Drive presenter.

He replaces DJ Ollah 7 who recently resigned to pursue personal interests.

The prime show airs from 6.30pm to 9pm every Tuesday and Wednesday, and Babongile will be hosting his debut show this evening.

He told H-Metro yesterday that he would bring a new flavour to the show and also promote the Ndebele culture.

Moreover, he plans to use his comedy skills to make the show more fun, having been in the broadcasting industry for over a decade and winning several awards for his outstanding performances.

He worked at Skyz Metro FM for eight years and at Keyona TV in Bulawayo before joining NRTV at the beginning of this year, where he hosted the breakfast show.

“I am excited about all this move, and listeners should brace themselves as I will bring in a different style to the radio, introducing them to a more entertaining adventure.

“Most people don’t understand the Ndebele language, so I will use my name The Ndebele Rockstar for them to know me better.

“I will have the opportunity to introduce the Ndebele style to everyone, the music, culture and language, as I am someone who likes promoting my culture.

“I am also good in Shona, so it will not be a hassle for me.

“I have been doing comedy for the past 15 years, and have been on roast shows with popular people, so I will throw in a little comedy during my show on radio to make it more fun.”

Babongile has been in the entertainment industry since high school days at Umzingwane Boys High in Esigodini and Milton Boys High in Bulawayo.

He used to organise shows and dramas.

Babongile started his schooling at Louis Mountbatten School in Harare from Grade 1-4 from 1982 to 1985.

He did his Grade 5-6 at Cecil John Rhodes Primary School in Gweru after his father had relocated to the Midlands capital.

He then completed his primary school at Baines Junior School in Bulawayo.

He did his Form 1-4 at Mzingwane High and completed his A-Level at Milton High in 1994.

Babongile is a NAMA award winner for outstanding radio presenter as well as outstanding promoter of the year.

He also won the Outstanding Radio DJ and Outstanding Artist of the Year at the Bulawayo Arts Awards.
