Starry-eyed or sceptical? Zimbabwe’s astrology obsession

FROM ancient civilisations to modern-day magazine stands, astrology has captivated humanity. Once primarily associated with European and Asian cultures, this practice of interpreting celestial bodies to predict future events has now found a devoted following in Zimbabwe. But does astrology truly hold the power to reveal our destiny?

Saturday Leisure delved into this age-old question, interviewing astrology enthusiasts and sceptics alike to explore the world of horoscopes and uncover the purported influence of the stars on our lives.

One enthusiast and believer, Sarah Banda, said horoscopes have been like clockwork for her.

“I’ve always been fascinated by the way astrology can reveal hidden patterns in our lives. My horoscope has helped me understand my strengths and weaknesses, and even predicted major life events,” said Banda, a self-proclaimed Leo.

On the other hand, an individual who preferred to be identified only as Simba, a practical Taurus, remained unconvinced.

“I don’t see how the position of stars can dictate my financial future or relationships. It’s just entertainment. I have been involved in seven relationships and they have all failed dismally,” he said.

Astrologer Rachel Nyathi disagreed with Simba’s assessment of the phenomenon. “Astrology is a powerful tool for self-discovery and growth. By understanding our birth charts and horoscopes, we can tap into our inner potential and make informed decisions. During difficult times, my horoscope has provided solace and guidance. It’s helped me trust in the universe’s plan. Astrology offered me a sense of comfort and direction,” said Nyathi.

But what about the sceptics?

“It’s just a bunch of vague generalisations. Horoscopes are so broad, they could apply to anyone,” argued Michael Sibanda.

As people explore the realm of astrology, they find a diverse array of perspectives. Here’s a brief look at the 12 star zodiac signs and their purported meanings:

According to Vogue India, “Each star sign falls into one of four triplicities (a group of three people or things). Triplicities are also known as zodiac sign elements: these are Air Signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), Fire Signs (Leo, Sagittarius, Aries), Earth Signs (Taurus, Capricorn, Virgo), and Water Signs (Scorpio, Pisces, Cancer).”
