Starting fire lands man in trouble

A Ruwa man yesterday appeared in court for throwing a cigarette stub that ignited a fire that destroyed vegetation and firewood at the National Rehabilitation Centre.

Terence Musikavanhu (30) of Ruwa, appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe.

He is facing charges of contravening Section 15 (2) of Statutory Instrument 7 of 2007 Environmental Management (Environmental Impact and Ecosystems Protection) Regulation of 2007.

He is expected back in court today.

The complainant is the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare represented by Mr Justice Goche.

It is alleged that on October 13 around 9am at National Rehabilitation Centre in Ruwa, Musikavanhu was clearing a piece of land.

It is alleged that he dropped a cigarette stub which started a fire.

The fire extensively damaged vegetation and firewood within the National Rehabilitation Centre premises.

The value of the damage was $500.
