State of roads rapped

Chief police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said in a 2012 festive season traffic report that the roads in urban areas also needed urgent attention since they contributed to accidents
“This element, exacerbated by the incessant rains in the period under review, made driving a nightmare and facilitated for the occurrence of road traffic accidents,” she said.

“The general state of the roads countrywide is in dire need of attention. Firstly, most of the highways, especially the Harare-Beitbridge road is now too narrow to accommodate the ever increasing volume of traffic. Haulage trucks and buses ply this route and certain known stretches of this road have become death traps.

“The same can be said about the other highways. Dualisation process on the Harare-Beitbridge Road and Harare-Masvingo Road is taking place, but at a very slow pace.”
