THE Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality Industry is making significant strides in preparing infrastructure for the Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanai Tourism Expo scheduled for September in Mutare.
In an interview recently, Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister, Honourable Barbara Rwodzi revealed that a team from her ministry recently travelled to China to finalise the Bill of Quantities (BOQ) for the international Expo’s infrastructure development.
“Our team went to China for the BOQs of what we need to put up as infrastructure for this international event. They are now back, and we are on our way to Manicaland to speed up the preparations. We will have state-of-the-art infrastructure in place in time for the Expo.
“With the Expo just around the corner, my ministry is working tirelessly to ensure that every detail is taken care of. From infrastructure development to marketing and promotions, Government is leaving no stone unturned in its bid to make the event a success.
“As the world watches, Zimbabwe is poised to shine as a premier tourism destination, and the Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanai Tourism Expo is set to be a major milestone in the country’s tourism calendar,” she said.
Minister Rwodzi expressed gratitude to President Mnangagwa and his Cabinet for approving the decentralisation of the Expo to Manicaland, marking a significant milestone in the province’s tourism development.
She also commended Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion Minister, Professor Mthuli Ncube for approving the proposed budget, ensuring that no one and no place is left behind in terms of MICE tourism.
“MICE tourism, which refers to Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions, is a vital sector for Zimbabwe’s economic growth. MICE tourism is a vital sector for our country’s economic growth, and we are excited to take the Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanai Tourism Expo to Mutare, leveraging the province’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and improving infrastructure,” said Minister Rwodzi.
She said Government aims to tap into the global MICE industry, valued at approximately £510-550 billion, and drive economic growth through revenue generation, job creation, and GDP growth.
Minister Rwodzi also highlighted Government’s efforts to develop larger conference facilities, including 5 000 to 10 000-seat venues in each province, to support the growth of MICE tourism.
“We want Manicaland to have one of the largest conference centres in Zimbabwe because MICE tourism infrastructure will bring people to Manicaland in their numbers. This year’s Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanai will bring MICE tourism to the province as we will have tourists from more than 20 countries in the province,” she said.
In addition to promoting MICE tourism, Minister Rwodzi said her ministry will also focus on industrial tourism and eco-tourism within the province.
She highlighted the potential for diamond cutting and polishing factories to be established in the province, adding value to the local diamond industry.
“We have diamonds in this province, and we need a diamond cutting and polishing factory for diamonds to be established in this province. Value addition factories must be established in the province to promote industrial tourism. We are also promoting eco-tourism in Manicaland this year. We want to showcase the province’s natural beauty and encourage sustainable tourism practices. This will, not only benefit the local economy, but also contribute to the conservation of our environment,” she said.
As the countdown to the Expo continues, Minister Rwodzi urged people in Manicaland to support the event and showcase the country’s hospitality and warmth.
“We want to welcome our guests with open arms and show them the best of Zimbabwe. We are confident that the Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanai Tourism Expo will be a huge success and leave a lasting impression on our visitors,” said Minister Rwodzi.
Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Advocate Misheck Mugadza said the Expo promises to be a game-changer for the province as it will showcase its rich cultural heritage, natural beauty and economic potential.
“As Government continues to invest in tourism infrastructure and promote the sector, we are poised to reap the benefits of the global MICE industry. With a focus on heritage-based tourism, the Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality Industry aims to push for more tourism business to Manicaland, leveraging its unique attractions and experiences because we are rich in heritage sites and cultural aspects,” he said.
He said the Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanai Tourism Expo is expected to attract thousands of visitors, including international tourists, business leaders, and industry experts.
The event will provide a platform for networking, knowledge sharing, and business opportunities, further solidifying Zimbabwe’s position as a premier tourism destination in Africa.
