As dawn breaks over the rolling plains of Mashonaland East, the glow from the blast furnaces of the Dinson Iron and Steel Company (DISCO) illuminates the horizon, signalling the emergence of what many economists believe could become the cornerstone of Zimbabwe’s industrial renaissance.
Towering conveyor systems snake across the vast industrial complex while fleets of trucks ferry raw materials into one of Africa’s most ambitious steel investments. At the heart of the operation lies a bold national aspiration: to transform Zimbabwe from an exporter of raw minerals into a modern industrial economy anchored on value addition and beneficiation.
With an investment estimated at US$1.5 billion, DISCO has become one of the flagship projects under the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS 2), the Government’s economic blueprint aimed at achieving upper-middle-income status by 2030. The integrated steel plant is expected to stimulate growth across mining, engineering, transport, energy and construction, while creating thousands of direct and indirect jobs.
Yet, beyond the impressive scale of the industrial complex, another equally important story is unfolding—one that centres on environmental management, technological innovation and the resettlement of communities affected by Zimbabwe’s largest steel project.
Globally, steel production remains one of the most technically demanding industries, generating emissions and particulate matter through processes such as crushing, sintering, smelting and rolling. For modern steel producers, environmental compliance has become as important as production efficiency.
At DISCO’s lime kiln, the first line of defence against dust pollution begins with enclosed barriers installed around conveyor belts and crushing equipment. The barriers are designed to contain fugitive dust emissions and minimise their movement beyond production zones.
Within the sintering plant, one of the most environmentally sensitive sections of an integrated steel works, engineers have deployed industrial baghouse filtration systems. These systems extract contaminated air through a network of pipes and channel it through specialised fabric filters capable of trapping fine particulate matter before purified air is released into the atmosphere.
The plant has also invested in electrostatic precipitators, sophisticated emission-control technologies widely used in advanced steel industries around the world. The system uses electrical charges to attract and remove dust particles from industrial gases, significantly reducing particulate emissions before the gases are discharged through chimneys.
Environmental specialists regard electrostatic precipitators as one of the most effective technologies for controlling particulate pollution in heavy industry because of their ability to capture extremely fine particles that would otherwise escape into the atmosphere.
The blast furnace, often described as the heart of steel production, has been equipped with multiple dust-management systems, including gravity vacuum storage bunkers and cloth-bag filtration technology. These systems separate dust from furnace gases, allowing the gases to be reused in combustion processes while reducing emissions.
Further downstream, the steel-rolling division employs soot-blower technology, which removes ash and soot deposits from heating surfaces. Apart from improving energy efficiency, the technology reduces fuel consumption and lowers greenhouse-gas emissions.
At DISCO’s power-generation plant, electrostatic precipitators work alongside stack scrubbers that remove sulphur dioxide and other harmful pollutants from flue gases before their release into the environment. The technology is designed to reduce the risk of respiratory illnesses and minimise the environmental impact associated with industrial power generation.
Together, these systems form a comprehensive environmental-management network that reflects the growing importance of sustainable industrial practices in modern manufacturing.
Beyond the factory gates, the impact of the steel project is equally visible in the resettlement communities of Single Thorn Farm in Chivhu and Sable Flats Farm in Chikomba, where families affected by the project have begun rebuilding their lives.
Twenty-two households have already been resettled at Sable Flats Farm, while others have established new homes at Single Thorn Farm.
For Nomore Zinatsa, the relocation represents more than a change of address.
“This project has brought a new beginning for many families. We are adapting to a new environment and looking forward to the opportunities that industrial development will create for future generations,” he said.
Chenjerayi Mushore believes the project has the potential to transform the local economy.
“The scale of development that is taking place here is unprecedented. We hope that the growth of the steel industry will continue to create opportunities for our children and contribute to national development,” he said.
Willard Chikanya described the project as a symbol of Zimbabwe’s industrial ambitions.
“Projects of this magnitude have the potential to change communities and strengthen the country’s economy. We are witnessing a historic transformation.”
Under the National Development Strategy 2, industrialisation, mineral beneficiation and infrastructure development have been identified as key drivers of economic growth. DISCO’s integrated value chain—from iron ore extraction to steel production—fits squarely within the country’s broader vision of increasing domestic manufacturing capacity and reducing dependence on imported products.
Economists argue that the success of projects such as DISCO will be measured not only by production volumes and export earnings but also by their ability to balance industrial growth with environmental sustainability and social development.
For Zimbabwe, the significance of DISCO extends beyond steel production. It represents a test case for whether Africa’s industrial future can be built on a foundation that combines economic growth, environmental responsibility and community inclusion.
As Zimbabwe accelerates towards Vision 2030, the furnaces of DISCO are doing more than producing steel—they are forging a new chapter in the country’s industrial history, one defined by technology, sustainability and the promise of long-term economic transformation.
