Steenkamps in ‘sensitive talks’ with Pistorius

Pretoria — Reeva Steenkamp’s parents are currently in “very sensitive negotiations” with Oscar Pistorius over compensation for the death of their daughter, their lawyer has confirmed.Beeld reported yesterday that the Advocate Dup de Bruyn is representing Barry and June Steenkamp. He also represented Fred van der Vyver in the Inge Lotz murder case. De Bruyn said the negotiations were at a sensitive stage and he did not want to comment further for fear of scuppering the talks.

He also declined to comment on the amount being negotiated. Weekend media reports indicated that the amount could be in the region of R2m to R3m.

Pistorius shot Reeva Steenkamp dead in his home on Valentine’s Day in 2013, claiming he thought she was an intruder. Steenkamp’s parents claimed that she supported them financially, and they fell on hard times after her death, no longer being able to afford the rental on their Port Elizabeth home. — Sapa
