Stop unnecessary travel-Government

THE Government has implored citizens to avoid unnecessary travel in a bid to curb the increase in Covid-19 local transmissions which have been on the increase.

On Monday the country recorded 134 Covid-19 local transmissions out of 140 cases.

Minister of Information Publicity and Broadcasting Services Cde Monica Mutsvangwa in a briefing to the media said capacitating of the transport sector was underway but noted that it was being abused too.

“The National Taskforce has noted with concern that despite the Government’s effort to capacitate Zupco to provide services to commuters in urban areas, there is a lot of unnecessary travelling which increases risk in urban areas.

Citizens are therefore encouraged to only travel when absolutely necessary and those who do not have to travel during peak hours are also encouraged to avoid travelling during these high congestion times,” she said.

Minister Mutsvangwa said she was aware that people were not stagnant beings but advised them to be diligent at all times.

“My fellow Zimbabweans, the Government appreciates how difficult it is for citizens to avoid venturing out due to the demands of different social circumstances. We also appreciate that we have been in lockdown for about five months now, but the worst is not yet over. Let us dig in into our legendary resilience and take heart in that what we are being asked to do will save us, our families and communities. Let us not violate the movement restrictions that are in place to protect us and others as well as the wearing of masks in public places,” she said.

Minister Mutsvangwa said experts have informed the Government that those who will win this war against the virus are those who adapt to the new normal which entails adopting the protective and preventative measures that curb the spread and transmission of Covid-19.

“This is a new normal. Let us all accept it and adapt our lifestyles to it,” she added.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe has surpassed the 6000 mark in Covid-19 cases with 140 new cases being recorded as of Monday.

Covid-19 cases now stand at 6070 while no new death has been reported in the past 24 hours, according to the Ministry of Health and Child Care daily Covid-19 update.

Of the 140 cases, 134 are local cases while five are returnees from Botswana and one is from South Africa.

“Active cases go up to 965 today (yesterday). National recovery rate stands at 82 percent and 78 total new recoveries were reported. Midlands reported 33 recoveries,” read the report.

Zimbabwe now has 4950 recoveries and 155 deaths so far.
