SCHOOL authorities at Valukhalu Secondary School in Empandeni village, Mangwe District, Matabeleland South Province, are racing against time to mobilise funds to repair two classrooms whose roof was blown off by a violent storm on November 30.
The storm, which hit the school owned by the Mangwe Rural District, did not harm any learners as it occurred on a Sunday.

Mangwe District Development Coordinator Ms Matilda Mlotshwa confirmed the developments.
“The storm destroyed a block of two classrooms, 90 chairs, and 90 tables. We are appealing to well-wishers who can assist us so that we complete all repairs during the holiday in readiness for the school opening next year. We need 66 roofing sheets, purling ridges, nails, tying wire, and replacement desks,” she said.
A number of schools in Matabeleland South have already suffered similar damage, although no injuries or deaths have been reported. Some classrooms are reportedly old and lack maintenance, making them prone to destruction by violent storms.
Climate-induced weather patterns continue to impact school infrastructure, highlighting the need for a shift in building designs to withstand extreme weather conditions.
