SEVERAL buildings housing inmates at the Khami Prison Complex’s Medium Prison was extensively damaged by a storm that hit the area on Monday afternoon.
Khami Prison Complex, situated on the outskirts of Bulawayo, consists of the Maximum Prison, Medium Prison and Remand Prison as well as Mlondozi that houses female inmates and mentally challenged patients.
The storm which reportedly lasted for a few hours damaged roofs of several buildings and about 160 metres of a perimeter fence around the prison complex.
No inmate was injured or is unaccounted for.
Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) Deputy Officer Commanding for Bulawayo Metropolitan Province Assistant Commissioner Priscilla Mthembu together with officials from the Civil Protection Unit (CPU) and members of the Joint Operations Committee (JOC) are on the ground accessing the damage.
Inmates from the damaged buildings were moved to other cells that are intact.
Employees from the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works were observed by Chronicle taking measurements of the damaged roof and roof trusses.
Under the supervision of ZPSC officers, inmates were digging holes to erect the damaged perimeter wall’s concrete poles back into place.
