Strategies for exam success

History lessons with Dr Manners Msongelwa

During this examination period there are strategies that a learner can use in order to pass the examinations. Some of these strategies include:

Balance all the subjects

A learner should have a study schedule that’s manageable. Read two or three subjects a day. Make sure you balance reading all the subjects that you are doing. Don’t focus on your favourite subject, but allocate all the subjects adequate time. Remember all the subjects are equally important.

Understand the demand of each subject

A learner should know what will be covered on the exam. Review the syllabus and use the course learning objectives as a guide on what might be tested. Follow the guidelines that you were given by the Teacher, revisit your notes and prepare for the exam. Revise past exam papers using the notes you were given by your Teacher. You can as well have study groups where you can revise and discuss with other Learners. Always be guided by the syllabus.

Visualize the material

Focus on the most important part of your class notes by condensing the material and underlining or highlighting key words and concepts. Try reformatting notes into charts, diagrams, mind maps or outlines to create visuals that can help you make sense of complex concepts.

Create flashcards

Recreate important facts, concepts and definitions on flashcards. A learner can revisit these flashcards minutes before the exams.

Take frequent breaks

For  every hour of studying take a 5-10 minute break. Avoid checking social media as a break. Instead digest everything that you had been reading. Checking social media distract you from everything that you had been reading .

Prepare for the day of the exam the night before.

Plan out the next exam the night before. Know the specific subject that you will write, the hours for that paper, the requirements or instructions and prepare considerably.

Get adequate sleep

Adequate rest is key in ensuring that your brain can function at its best during the exam. You may be tempted to stay up late cramming the night before the exam but resist the urge. Get adequate rest .

Get up earlier in the morning

Wake up early and prepare for the day and do final touch ups. This has several advantages because you will do everything in time and by so doing boost your confidence. You won’t panic when you are in the exam room. Pack your stuff, iron your uniform, bath, brush your teeth, polish your shoes, pray and then prepare to go to school.
Remember to put God first in everything that you do.
