Government is working on a policy framework to impound and auction livestock that stray on roads, the Senate heard last week. Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Obert Mpofu on Thursday said Cabinet had approved a policy framework to that effect. Minister Mpofu was responding to a question from Bulawayo Metropolitan Senato, Matson Hlalo (MDC-T) on what practical steps Government was taking to ensure that the country did not continue to lose lives due to stray animals. “One thing we are doing is that we are appealing to those who want to join us in the rehabilitation of the road to include fencing.
“We will also have highway patrols and Cabinet has approved that, where they patrol our highways as what happens in other countries like South Africa and Botswana.
“If they find stray cattle, they impound and sell,” said Minister Mpofu. “We have come up with measures which we will share with you on their implementation,” he said before advising he would soon appoint new boards made up of new and vibrant people to run parastatals.
