Streak Snr on course in bowls tourney

ZIMBABWE’S bowls veteran Denis Streak is through to the singles semi-final of the Zimbabwe Nationals which continue at Hillside Bowling Club this morning.Streak, who has made a good name in his bowling career and has captained Zimbabwe, feels he has a chance of winning the tournament.

On his way to glory in the semis, Streak beat Toni Evercroft, Timothy Machisa and Mark Fieldus in the knock-out matches and he is expected to play Terry Bowes who is also one of the country’s top bowling stars.

“I am happy with my performance in the singles, the tournament has been very interesting and competitive and it was mostly dominated by the Matabeleland teams.

“I am now looking forward to the semi-final where I will play Bowes and I feel I have a chance of doing well but will see how it goes on the greens,” said Streak.

In another singles match which was played, Harare’s Alexandra Sports Club Clive Robertson won all his three games to proceed to the semi-finals.
Robertson has represented the country in many bowls’ tournaments locally and internationally where he has managed to grab medals.

Robertson is expected to play Gary Sandwith in the semi-final and if he wins, he will face Streak or Bowes.

While the four bowlers are through to the semis, other players’ participation ended in their first encounter on the greens as it was a knockout format.

Aaron Chilundo who started his singles match in high hopes, his journey ended on a competitive point.
Chilundo got knocked out by one shot by Mark Fieldus.

The 17-year-old Chilundo said although he lost the match, he was happy with the exposure in the sport.

“I enjoyed the tournament and am not affected by not winning because I am getting more experience in the event. I must admit that it was tough but I was happy to be part of it,” said Chilundo.

In the women’s section, Alexandra Sports Club player Julie Barnes got herself through to the semi-finals after her fine performance in the three games where she bowled exceptionally.

“I won all my three games in straight sets, kept focus and concentrated on drawing into the head consistently. This is my first time to win three matches in the singles. I am very happy.

“I am hoping to do well in the semi-finals this morning,” said Barnes.

Jenny Schoultz, Mel James and Jane Rigby are the other semi-finlists.
