Zimbabwe National Students Union has hailed the Government which is set to reintroduce grants and loans in the 2014 budget to alleviate the plight of students in the country’s tertiary institutions.ZINASU spokesperson Avoid Masiraha told The Herald yesterday that the reintroduction of grants and loans was a positive move that would bring hope to many students from poor backgrounds. “We applaud the Government for taking steps to reintroduce grants for student,” he said.
“Students have been struggling to pay their fees and many have been living like destitutes.”
Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development Deputy Minister Godfrey Gandawa was quoted in the media recently saying that Government would reintroduce grants and loans to enhance the welfare of students in the country. “For a long time, the
Government has supported the students by all means. It is the economic meltdown that made the Government fail to provide grants to tertiary students in the country,” the deputy minister was quoted saying. “Student grants are at the top of our priorities list and come 2014 the grants should have been put in place to assist students.”
Masiraha said he was optimistic that the Government would honour its pledge.
“Although we accept the decision, as a student body we will also push for this to be effected next year,” Masiraha said.
