THE Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority has warned the public to avoid dangling electricity cables to prevent unnecessary loss of lives from electrocution.Zesa spokesperson Mr Fullard Gwasira yesterday said rains destroy electricity infrastructure, posing danger to humans and animals.
“Now that the rains are upon us, trees fall on power lines, water seeps into cable joints and substations are struck by lightning causing damage to the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company infrastructure resulting in increased faults. We urge our valued customers not to touch any dangling cables and to report such faults as soon as possible to the nearest ZETDC office,” he said.
Dangling electricity cables have claimed lives with minors the most victims. Last year a Grade 4 Tomlison Primary School pupil was severely burnt after falling into a ditch with naked Zesa cables which had been left unsecured by workers that were carrying maintenance work.
A 13 year old boy from Kadoma had both his legs amputated after he stepped on live electricity cables left exposed by Zesa employees while a Goromonzi woman and her four month child were electrocuted after coming into contact with live electricity cables.
