STUDENTS’ SUPERMAN

GODFREY Mukambi is enjoying a stunning resurgence at Herentals where he has transformed himself into the Students’ Superman this season.

The former Dynamos player appears to have found the perfect home he has been looking for throughout his career as a professional footballer.

Mukambi is the heart and soul of the Students defence and, of late, he has turned himself into someone who provides the goals, especially in big matches.

Goal-scoring was not a part of his game during his time at the Glamour Boys but he has become one of the Students go-to man when they really need a goal.

He was on target again at Rufaro on Sunday, scoring the priceless goal which helped Herentals secure the biggest win of their season with a 1-0 victory over a limping CAPS United. Mukambi now has FOUR goals this season, which is a significant return for a player whose main job is to ensure he provides leadership in defence.

He has scored half the goals which leading goal-scorers, Khama Billiat, and William Manondo, have scored so far this season.

Both Billiat and Manondo, who have scored eight goals, are proven goal-scorers and have been doing this throughout their careers.

Mukambi outshone Manondo on Sunday as he scored a goal while the CAPS United hitman did not add to his tally of eight goals.

Herentals have so far outperformed CAPS United in the league championship race and find themselves in seventh place on the table with 27 points.

That is the same number of points which Dynamos have but the Glamour Boys are in sixth place because of a superior goal difference.

While both clubs have scored 17 goals, DeMbare have conceded 14 goals, one goal less than the 15, which the Students have let in.

“I think what MaRubber (Mukambi) gives you is everything that he has — heart, soul and spirit,” said a local coach, who chose anonymity.

“I don’t think there is any other player who puts in the 100 percent which this guy puts in every shift.

“There are some guys who say some of his tackles are over the line but it’s who he is because he is a fighter.”
