Fashion began from the early Stone Age and a lot has happened ever since. In the early ages people used to be half-naked and wore animal skins and leaves and carried different weapons like bows and arrows. Those were the trends of the ages.French designer Coco Chanel once said, “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.”
It is true that style and our lives are interlaced and it is reflected by our contemporary life.
Well today’s teenagers are mostly attracted to Western culture triggered by the exotic designs and students want to create the unique image and for them fashion is a way to express their inner self and by having the latest clothes they want to look cool.
Designers think fashion create influence and it pervades and highlights their presence.
Somehow most teens are designers in their own right as they dictate the type of clothing they deem fashionable and trendy.
All these can be understood if you come to Courtney Hotel, Harare this afternoon for a fashion show to be hosted by upcoming designer Mellisa Mupambiki.
Mellisa (16) said that the show serves as a platform to market her designs and launching the label.
In an interview with Cool Lifestyle, the teen designer said all is going according to plan.
“I am launching my label and I am very excited about it. The name of the label is a surprise and guests should look forward to have some fun. Fashion is the in-thing and we can’t run away from it,” she said.
Mellisa said all proceeds from the show will go to Kasipiti Children’s Home.
“This is a charity event and I saw it necessary to host such event. Many teens nowadays talk fashion and this is the start to assist the less privileged,” she said.
Mellisa said the dress code for today’s show is formal.
“My theme is ‘Hollywood all the way’ because we are working with some of the trends from the West, what people want so let me give it to them. In fact I’m catering for girls and young women because when it comes to designing, women’s bodies are a dream to accentuate,” she said.
She said that among the invited guests, there is Miss Harare 2013 junior and a surprise guest performance.
Mellisa also said she ventured into designing late last year and her role models are the First Lady Amai Mugabe and Ghanaian tailor Elikem Kumordzie.
