Ideally subject choices or combinations in schools should be influenced by the learner’s plans in life.
The learner must be clear on what he or she wants to become in life. Admitted some school circumstances do not necessarily allow for this choice to prevail.
However, at Trust Academy High School we focus on the aspirations of the student and help him/ her to take subject combinations that align with his or her career plans. We empower students to make informed and responsible choices for themselves.
We believe learners should not be passive receivers! We encourage students to make their career decisions in accordance with their interests, abilities, and personal orientations apart from external factors such as career prospects, subject choices available, constraints and opportunities.
Why is it important for learners to make informed subject choices?
The subject choice at secondary school level (right from Form 1 — if possible) could determine the field of study learners can follow once they complete school. In other words, if learners do not select the correct combination of subjects, they could find themselves unable to enter certain higher or further education programmes.
The first thing learners need to know is that to qualify for higher/ further education and training studies they must be certain that they have the right subjects to meet the minimum entry requirements to study further. Of course, for a degree, diploma or certificate studies, it is important that the learner chooses subjects that are appropriate to the career he/ she intends to follow and that they try to keep their options open as their plans may change as they go along.
