SUDAN has proposed the setting up of a joint committee with Zimbabwe to coordinate areas of cooperation in the political and economic spheres. The proposal was made by Sudan’s ambassador to Zimbabwe Mr Hamdan Wadi Dldoom when he paid a courtesy call on Senior Minister of State Simon Khaya Moyo at his Munhumutapa Offices yesterday.

“I came in order to present myself to the Senior Minister of State and discuss with him how I am going to start my assignment here in Zimbabwe that is why I discussed with him two things.

“I have a proposal which I have delivered. I have two draft agreements one of which is between the two news agencies Suna (Sudan News Agency) and New Ziana and another between the two ministries of Foreign Affairs in order to establish what we call a Political Consultation Committee.

“I am proposing these two agreements so that they will enable us to find areas where we can cooperate. Such a cooperation will have to identify the areas the two respective countries have a comparative advantage,” he said.

Ambassador Dldoom said there was need to develop the good relations between the two countries so that they can benefit in practical ways and also have common positions on various issues on the international platform.

Meanwhile Namibian ambassador to Zimbabwe Ms Balbina Daes Pienaar also paid a courtesy call on Senior Minister Khaya Moyo and called on the two countries to find ways they could consolidate relations.

“This is a unique courtesy call I paid since it was not only to the Senior Minister of State but also to the chairman of the ruling party, Zanu-PF, the people’s party. Therefore our focus was to look at ways of how we could consolidate the already existing relations between our already sister countries and how, by joining forces, Zim Asset could be a reality on the ground,” she said.
Ambassador Pienaar said some of the issues they discussed include cooperation in the agricultural field.

“The many issues we have been looking at is the importance of the agricultural sector. It is the backbone of any economy, it is the core to empower the grassroots people, it is the core to grow the economy,” she said.

The Namibian ambassador commended Zimbabwe for emphasising the issue of food security and nutrition in the Zim Asset document as one of the clusters to be given prominence saying a healthy nation was a pre-requisite for economic development.
