Sulu Chimbetu thrills at Mahofa gala

From Walter Mswazie in Chiredzi
DENDERA exponent Sulumani “Sulu” Chimbetu gave a flawless performance before more than 10,000 Zanu-PF supporters who attended a music gala to celebrate Senator Shuvai Mahofa’s recent appointment as Masvingo Minister of State for Provincial Affairs at Chishamiso Stadium in Chiredzi on Saturday.

Sulu who was supported by gospel singer, Mathias Mhere and several local artistes, was the toast of the Zimbabwe Cross Border and Traders Association (ZCBTA)-organised bash which began just after midday.

Mhere belted out tunes Vimba NaJehovha, Areka and Chipostori from his popular album Anoita Minana. The most popular song of the night was Favour which saw Senate President Edna Madzongwe taking to the dance-floor. The crowd went into a frenzy when Mhere played some songs from his new album, Nguva Yenyasha which included songs about the infidelity incident involving his wife, Susan Dzinamatira and friend Gift Mahlupeka.

Various poets also took to the podium to celebrate Mahofa’s appointment after which the man himself, Sulu and his Orchestra Dendera Kings took to the stage. The band took fans down memory lane when they played Simon Chimbetu’s Ndarangirira Gamba, among other great hits.

Fans went haywire when he sang songs from his latest album Gunship. Tracks such as Nyuchi and Phone Yangu stole the thunder from earlier displays by other artistes.

The former Airforce of Zimbabwe gunman who on Friday night played alongside dancehall guru Winky “Bigman” D at Ritz Night Club and left Masvingo fans asking for more, also gave a five-star performance at the gala.

Speaking on the sidelines of the gala, Zimbabwe Amalgamated Housing Association (Zaha) director Clr Killer Zivhu described Sulu as an innovative singer.

“Sulu is just good. He has managed to ride on his father’s legacy so well. He’s showing music fans that he is now his own man who can stand alone.

“I rate him as one of the best because he’s not copying his late father’s songs, but has begun his own journey. The sky is the limit for him,” said Zivhu who is also the ZCBTA President.
