Music lovers will today be treated to a special Heroes Day event when Suluman Chimbetu and his Orchestra Dendera Kings perform at The Volt in a show that is meant to salute liberation war fighters. The show also signals the beginning of Simon “Chopper” Chimbetu commemorations as the nation counts down to 11 years since the star died. Chopper was one of the popular patriotic musicians whose music oiled the liberation war. During and after the liberation struggle, he remained steadfast in preaching unity and singing against imperialism.
Sulu took over from his father and has kept the stance in showing young people the importance of patriotism. Tonight the musician will play songs that speak to the soul of the nation as the country celebrates Heroes Day.
“It is an important day for us. We should salute the heroes that fought for our liberation. I inherited music that is important in imparting the values of freedom and sovereignty. We will continue singing for the development of the country and we will always castigate sell-outs,” said Sulu.
Organiser of the show Spencer Madziya said the event will be an important outing for people that value the history of the country.
“We are all celebrating because some people sacrificed for the liberation of this country. We have to continue honouring those people and this show will be a special occasion to salute our heroes. It is also an occasion to salute Simon Chimbetu who is revered as one of the people that stood for principles of the liberation struggle.”
