MUSIC lovers in Bulawayo will be treated to a special pre-Heroes Day event on Saturday when dendera exponent Suluman Chimbetu and his Orchestra Dendera Kings perform at Palace Hotel Gardens, in a show that is meant to salute liberation war fighters.
Show organiser Tapiwa Gandiwa said the event will be a significant occasion for those who appreciate the country’s history. He said it will be an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made by our heroes and to celebrate their legacy.
“We are all celebrating the sacrifices made by those who fought for our country’s liberation. This special event is an opportunity to honour our heroes and also pay tribute to Sulu’s father Simon, a revered figure who embodied the principles of the liberation struggle. His music served as a powerful tool in uniting the nation and inspiring hope during those challenging times.
“We should salute the heroes who fought for our liberation. That’s why we decided to host a pre-Heroes Day special gig. This will allow people who need to travel to do so after we’ve celebrated the sacrifices made by those who fought for our country’s freedom,” said Gandiwa.
He said the show also signals the beginning of Sulu’s father, Simon ‘Chopper’s commemorations as the nation counts down to 19 years since the star died.
Chopper popularised the dendera beat that Suluman inherited. He died on 5 August 2005 and is a provincial hero who was buried at Mashonaland West Provincial Heroes Acre in Chinhoyi.
Chopper hit stardom with songs such as “Dzandipedza Mafuta”, “Marirangwe”, “Hoko” and “Newspaper”, among other songs he wrote after the formation of his Orchestra Ndendera Kings.
