SUN SHINES FOR MUKARAKATE SCHOOLBOYS

UPCOMING footballers in rural areas deserve a chance to showcase their talent but not much is being done to achieve this target, a local traditional leader has said.

Speaking at the Forward Nyanyiwa Foundation (FNF) tournament held at Mutize Primary School at Mukarakate in Murehwa last weekend, Chief Mangwende emphasised importance of sport in the fight against drug and substance abuse.

“It’s important for children in the rural areas to get platforms to showcase their talent but discipline is very key in all this,” said Chief Mangwende.

“Football can be used to fight drug abuse, so people like Forward Nyanyiwa should be hailed for coming up with this idea.”

The FNF tournament is the brainchild of Ireland-based Nyanyiwa, who is a former student at Mutize Primary School.

Chingwena Primary School showcased their resilience as they beat Mutize 1-0, after walking about 8kms to the match venue.

They were rewarded with a brand new kit and soccer balls.

“I get excited when I see these kids given an opportunity to shine, especially those from the remote areas,” said Nyanyiwa.

“I am a former student at Mutize and I know how tough it is for the kids in these areas.

“So, as a way of giving back to my community, we will host annual tournaments and also try and get scouts to attend.”

Mutize Primary School, located a few kilometres from Mukarakate Business Centre, was a hive of activity, as Primary Schools from the area converged for the inaugural tournament.

“We have a lot more in store,” said Nyanyiwa.

“The aim is to also empower the girl child through sport, so we will also have netball competitions.”
