THE Sunday News dominated the fifth edition of the Road Safety Journalistic awards, winning the Best Print Media House of the Year award with three of its journalists scooping awards.
The annual media awards ceremony, which is hosted by the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe, was held in Harare recently.
Photojournalist Obey Sibanda scooped the best photojournalist award while photographer, Nkosizile Ndlovu and the Chief photographer Elliah Saushoma were the first and second runners-up respectively.
Senior reporter, Gibson Mhaka, scooped the first runner-up awards under the Best Print Media Road Safety Reporter of the Year, Nkosilathi Sibanda got a consolation prize under the same category which received the highest number of entries and B-Metro intern, Vuyelwa Sibindi, scooped the managing director’s road safety student reporter of the year first runner-up award.
The Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development Dr Joram Gumbo who was the guest of honour encouraged journalists to keep on raising awareness on road safety measures so as to teach people on road safety and bring about behaviour change. The minister took a swipe on the Vehicle Inspection Department (VID) officials, who for years have been accused of soliciting for bribes from people who require drivers’ licences. He accused the officials of robbing people of their hard earned cash through demanding bribes.
“Issuing a licence to a person to drive because he or she has got money to bribe is tantamount to issuing him or her with a death warrant,” said the Minister.
