Sundowns widen the gap as Chiefs lose again

Mamelodi Sundowns strengthened their grip at the top of the DStv Premiership standings as their Gauteng rivals, Kaizer Chiefs dropped points once again.

Two goals from Aubrey Modiba and Justice Chabalala (own-goal) earned Masandawana a 2-0 win over Chippa United on Saturday in Gqeberha as the champions opened a five-point lead at the top of the league standings.

The action started on Friday as SuperSport United claimed a 1-0 win over Cape Town City courtesy of Sundowns loanee Godspower Ighodaro’s second-half goal in Pretoria and the victory elevated Matsatsantsa to the second spot on the log.

Stellenbosch FC showed character as they came back to secure a 3-1 win over Royal AM thanks to goals from Deano van Rooyen, Jayden Adams and Iqraam Rayners with Hopewell Cele having handed the hosts the lead in Pietermaritzburg.

Kaizer Chiefs’ troubles continue

The action continued on Saturday as Polokwane City emerged as 3-1 winners against fellow newly-promoted Cape Town Spurs side with Man of the Match Oswin Appollis hitting the back of the net twice in Polokwane.

In Durban, the KwaZulu-Natal Derby encounter between AmaZulu FC and Richards Bay failed to produce a winner as the two teams settled for a 0-0 draw and they both remain winless in the current campaign.

Lastly, Chiefs are still winless in the league this term after suffering a 1-0 loss to TS Galaxy in Nelspruit with their stand-in captain Brandon Petersen netting an unfortunate own-goal to hand the Rockets a narrow win –SuperSport.
