Prominent Sungura musician Gift Amuli, who stands accused of launching a cyber-attack against fellow musician and Zimbabwe Music Rights Association (ZIMURA) vice-chairperson First Farai, appeared in court on Friday.

Amuli, who is facing charges of transmitting false data with the intent to cause harm, was granted bail of US$200 by Harare provincial magistrate Ms Ruth Moyo.

He is scheduled to return to court on March 10. The former ZIMURA board member is alleged to have targeted First Farai through a Facebook post made on January 20, 2026, just a day after Farai was elected ZIMURA vice chairperson.

Prosecutor Mr Lawrence Gangarahwe told the court that Amuli used his Facebook account, named “Gift Amuli”, to post defamatory statements aimed at tarnishing First Farai’s reputation.

The post in question read: “Murume wekuba mari panhamo wozvipa chigaro kuita hushamwari hwembavha” (loosely translated as: A man who stole money at a funeral has given himself a leadership position, forming alliances with thieves). The statement was accompanied by a manipulated photo featuring both Amuli and First Farai.

First Farai, upon seeing the post, reported the matter to the police, stating that the accusations were false and had caused significant damage to his dignity and professional reputation.

Additionally, Amuli is accused of falsely claiming that First Farai embezzled condolence funds intended for the late music icon Cephas “Motomuzhinji” Mashakada, who passed away in 2011.

Amuli is being represented by Mr Thembani Mpofu.
