The 2025 Sunshine City Festival, set to kick off tomorrow at Alexandra Sports Club, has received a major boost with the inclusion of renowned Russian dance ensemble Altai in its line-up.

This marks a ground-breaking moment in the history of the annual festival, especially as Zimbabwe celebrates Culture Month, featuring a series of festivities across the country.

In addition to this Russian ensemble, the two-day festival will host a cultural exchange workshop between Zimbabwe and Russia, aimed at empowering creatives eager to enhance their skills and profiles.

Titled “Traditional Dance as the Basis of Spiritual and Moral Education,” the workshop promises to provide valuable insights and training for participants.

Following the workshop, attendees can anticipate an electrifying performance from Altai, named after the esteemed dancer Alexander Brezikov.

In a statement, it was announced that the initiative dubbed “Days of Russian Spiritual Culture” will be held for the first time in Zimbabwe.

“From May 24 to 26, the capital of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Harare, will host events for the Day of Russian Spiritual Culture. On May 24, the State Song and Dance Ensemble “Altai” will present a concert programme in Harare.

“It is a unique company that preserves and develops the traditional folklore of the Altai Territory, conveying its national flair through a seamless combination of vocal and choreographic art. The ensemble’s programme features Russian and Cossack folk songs and dances,” reads part of the statement.

To ensure that children are not left behind, the Russian contingent will also empower young creatives through a workshop.

Over the weekend, soloists from the “Altai” ensemble will conduct master classes for the young audience.

Cultural activities have been greatly enhanced with the arrival of the “Days of Russian Spiritual Culture in Zimbabwe,” which are part of the Sunshine City Festival, a brainchild of Nigel Chinovhiringa. The festival organisers have gone out of their way to bring an international flair to the two-day event, which is set to be the major highlight of the weekend.

What raises the appeal of Altai’s performance in Harare is that they will showcase their talents during the Day of Slavic Literature and Culture tomorrow and Africa Day on May 25. All these performances and workshops fall within National Culture Month, which will emphasise the strong bonds of brotherhood and mutual sympathy enjoyed by Russia and Zimbabwe. Days of Spiritual Culture is a multi-genre project of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, aimed at demonstrating the richness and diversity of Russia’s spiritual culture in foreign countries.

The tour is organised by the Autonomous Non-profit Organisation “Russian Seasons.”

Since 2008, the events of the Days of Spiritual Culture of Russia have reached over 50 countries.

Meanwhile, this year’s event promises excitement, with local and regional artistes set to exchange notes under one stage at Alex Sports Club.

Some local acts participating in the festival include Nyasha David, DJ Hush, MC Gudo, Oriyano, MC Tatts, DJ Fugee, Feli Nandi, Nisha Ts, Oriyano, Saintfloew, Gary B, Merciless Zimbabwe, Etherton B, and his sidekick Garry B. Top South African amapiano superstars DJ Maphorisa and Prince Kaybee are also part of the strong line-up.

The inclusion of the Russian dance ensemble Altai will provide festival-goers with variety and value for their money.

However, it should be noted that as the festival unfolds, it not only celebrates the rich cultural tapestry of Zimbabwe but also fosters international collaboration and understanding with Russia. This year’s event is poised to be a memorable experience, bridging cultures through the power of dance and creativity.
