EARLY reactions show South African football fans expressing sadness at losing Khama Billiat to ambitious Castle Lager Premier Soccer League side Yadah.
His unveiling, initially set for yesterday was moved to next week, as the function clashed with the unveiling of the new Castle Lager package for the Premier Soccer League.
Billiat achieved legendary status in his 13 years at three South African Premiership sides, Ajax Cape Town (three seasons), Mamelodi Sundowns (five seasons) and Kaizer Chiefs (five seasons).
He made of total 362 appearances, including 279 league matches, for the three clubs between 2011 and last year while scoring 123 goals and assisting 48 times.
The fans were all agreed on Billiat’s talent and the contribution he made to the South African football scene over the past decade.
While some fans questioned the wisdom of refusing a new contract at Kaizer Chiefs, even if downgraded as he will be earning less in Zimbabwe, others blamed the Soweto giants for ‘ruining’ Billiat’s South African career.
One fan said Billiat had grown frustrated at not winning any silverware at Kaizer Chiefs, where his career took a knock since joining them from Mamelodi Sundowns.
Billiat won the South African Premiership and CAF Champions League at Sundowns.
A number of fans agreed that Billiat had made a blunder to leave Sundowns for Chiefs as he seemed to have played his best football for the South African champions.
