Super League remains vibrant

THE Zimbabwe Women Super League led by Miriam Sibanda, Ben Mamoche and Adwin Magosvongwe has been playing games despite efforts by beleaguered Zifa chief executive officer, Jonathan Mashingaidze to disrupt the league.

A total of 11 clubs are affiliated with the Super League and the clubs have resorted to using retired referees after Mashingaidze ordered the referees’ committee not to assign match officials to any of the league matches.

“We are playing our matches as usual despite all these and hatisi kumira kana kudzokera kumashure (We will not stop nor retreat)”, said Sibanda.

Last week, a total of 18 goals were scored in the five matches played by the teams affiliated with the Zimbabwe Women’s League.

Black Rhinos won 6-0 against Bulawayo-based side Borrow, while league debutants, ZRP Morris Depot are smarting from a 7-2 drubbing by Mutare prison side, Tenax.

Auckland Queens of Bindura collected maximum points away to newcomers, Cowdray Park Queens.

Jerymike Gumbo-owned side Auckland won 3-2. Two games pitting Hwange and Mwenezana and a Harare derby featuring Weerams and ZRP Harare ended in stalemates.

The coal miners, Hwange and sugarcane growers, Mwenezana played a goalless draw at Lwendulu Old Ground in Hwange.

Weerams and ZRP Harare drew two-all in a match played at Prince Edward grounds in Harare.

Ironically, a parallel league has fizzled out with only two or at most four teams managing to fulfil fixtures each week. The league was divided into Pool A and Pool B in order to cut down on travelling expenses.

Last weekend only two matches were played. In Pool A, Mufakose Queens defeated Conduit Academy 1-0 and in Pool B, Chipembere won 2-1 against Inline.

New Orleans and Masvingo have failed to play any matches as they do not have any players to register having last played league matches in 2012.
