SHARKS swimming club retained their title as champions in the Mashonaland Senior Championships when they finished top of the table with 1 997 points on Sunday Les Brown pool in the capital. The championships, which run over two weekends, started with the first leg on November 29 and ended on December 1.

The second leg resumed last Friday and the curtain came down on Sunday with Sharks being crowned the champions.

Sharks’ swimmers dominated most of the events with the likes of Bruce Chiang, Dylan Huang, Peirce Lara and Sahnya Abdulla scooping several medals in various events.

They were followed by Pirates Zimbabwe with 1 389 points and most of their medals came from James Lawson and Hollie Stander.
Pirates had taken a lead in the first leg with 697 points but their hopes were crushed as Sharks came back a strong team when the championships resumed over the weekend.

Spartans came third with 634.50 points and Harare Otters accumulated 586 points to finish fourth while Dorado managed fifth position with 517 points.

Highlands had 329.50 points to settle for sixth place.

Crocs had 15 points on seventh place and Marlins were bottom with three points.

Mashonaland swimming board chairperson, Niroshia Abdulla, was happy with the competition displayed during the event.

She said most of their swimmers achieved the times for various tours lined up for next year.

“I was very impressed with the level of swimming at this season’s championships. The standard of swimming has, without a doubt, improved and it is very encouraging to see this, 185 swimmers took part in our Senior Championships starting from swimmers as young as nine.

“Congratulations to Sharks, who were the overall winners of the combined team scores, with Pirates coming second and Spartans third.

“There were some records broken but they need to go through the normal ratification process.

“Most swimmers achieved their personal bests and even more have achieved the times needed to go on tour next year,” said Abdulla.

Abdulla said they were now shifting their focus to next year with their first event of the year scheduled for January 9 to 11.
