A Harare woman refunded her husband the bride price after their marriage turned abusive and irreconcilable, the Civil Court heard yesterday. Mary James gave Tendai Borowondo the US$400 he paid to her parents as lobola and is now seeking a protection order against him.
“He is my former husband and we separated eight months ago because he would vandalise my property, assault me and hire gangsters to attack me.
“After we separated he came with a car that was loaded with people and wanted to attack me. Last year he demanded the US$400 bride price he paid to my parents and I gave him thinking he was going to leave me alone,” James said.
She said Borowondo was in the habit of jumping the gate and forcing himself into her house where he would sleep.
Borowondo dismissed James’ claims of separation saying they were still married.
“We came today from the same house. We slept on the same bed but I am not eating the food she cooks.
“I have since bought a beast which I want to give to her parents as an apology,” he said. Magistrate Ms Rekinah Dzikiti ordered Borowondo to stop assaulting James and urged the couple to follow proper divorce procedures if marriage had failed.
