Super Sunday Showdown: Harare Bulawayo brace for football fiesta

Innocent Kurira, Zimpapers Sports Hub

TOMORROW’S Super Sunday in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League is poised to deliver high drama as Zimbabwe’s footballing cities, Harare and Bulawayo, gear up for two potentially electrifying clashes. At Barbourfields Stadium, Highlanders will lock horns with CAPS United, while Dynamos will square off against Chicken Inn at Rufaro Stadium.

Both matches are crucial for all the teams involved, with the pressure steadily mounting on the respective coaches and players.

Saturday Chronicle takes a closer look at what’s at stake, the potential for drama, and what fans can anticipate from these two significant matches.

Pressure Intensifies on PSL Managers
Of the four managers overseeing these fixtures, Lloyd “Mablanyo” Chigowe at Dynamos might feel his position is relatively secure for the time being. However, for the others, the heat is definitely on. Lloyd Chitembwe at CAPS United is already facing discontent from the supporters following a poor run of form, with calls for his dismissal intensifying after their defeat to Ngezi Platinum Stars last Sunday. Joey Antipas at Chicken Inn is under increasing scrutiny having failed to secure a victory in their last five matches. Kelvin Kaindu of Highlanders, while still enjoying fan support, is also beginning to feel the pressure, as his team has been plagued by defensive lapses despite demonstrating promise in attack. The pressure is palpable for all these coaches, with results becoming increasingly critical as the season progresses.

Highlanders v CAPS United
With CAPS United languishing in the relegation zone with a mere four points from their opening five games, they are in urgent need of a turnaround. Highlanders, on the other hand, are in a slightly more comfortable position but with only six points to their name, the pressure remains on them to improve their standing. Last season saw the two clubs share the spoils in their head to head meetings. Highlanders secured a 2-0 victory in the first leg at Barbourfields, but CAPS United responded emphatically, claiming a 3-2 win in the return fixture at Rufaro Stadium. This time around, the stakes are even higher, with both teams desperate for points to avoid slipping further behind the league leaders. Despite showing encouraging signs in attack, Highlanders have often been the architects of their own downfall defensively. Coach Kaindu has voiced his frustration with his team’s defensive record, citing “soft goals” that have cost them valuable points.

While Highlanders have managed to find the net eight times in five games, their inability to protect leads has been their undoing. With a fan base renowned for its high expectations, Bosso will need to tighten up defensively if they are to stand a chance against their fierce rivals on Sunday. Adding to Kaindu’s worries is the fitness of influential defender Andrew Mbeba, who was stretchered off during the 1-1 draw with Triangle United. His absence would be a significant blow for Bosso, not only in defence but also in attack, as Mbeba has been a key threat from set-pieces.

For CAPS United, the pressure is intensifying. With just four points from five matches, their supporters have already begun to voice their dissatisfaction. Despite their established reputation, they have struggled to produce consistent performances this season. The team is still searching for a spark, and this clash with Highlanders presents a golden opportunity to prove they can rise to the occasion.

Dynamos v Chicken Inn
In the second significant match of the day, Dynamos will face off against Chicken Inn at Rufaro Stadium. While both clubs have experienced a difficult start to the season, Chicken Inn’s predicament appears even more precarious. The Gamecocks have drawn four of their five matches, and more concerning, they have only managed to score a single goal. Occupying 15th place with just four points, they are in dire need of a victory to ignite their campaign.

For Dynamos, it has been a similarly frustrating start to the season. With only one win in their five games, they have accumulated just six points and currently sit 11th in the league standings. Their attack has been blunt, with Shadreck Nyahwa being the solitary player to find the back of the net. However, their defence has been relatively solid, marshalled by captain Emmanuel Jalai.

Joey Antipas

Despite their defensive solidity, Dynamos have struggled to convert enough chances into goals. They desperately require a more clinical edge in attack to ensure they remain in contention for the league title. With only one goal originating from open play, the onus is firmly on the forwards to step up and deliver.

Dynamos’ season suffered a setback last weekend with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Manica Diamonds, a result that left them seven points adrift of the league leaders, Ngezi Platinum Stars. While their defensive efforts have been commendable, their inability to score goals has hampered their ability to build any meani
