circumstances, it does not matter how disadvantaged you are, how bad your childhood is. The choice is yours to make the best out of what you have.
Results are out and the light is shining on some of the coolest teens who broke records in their respective schools.
On the list of our record-breaking geniuses is Mbare-based Pardington Mudyiwa (19) of Harare High School who attained 23 points.
“My combination was Economics, Maths, and Accounting, Business Studies. However, I ended up taking up Further Mathematics,” he said. The teen genius was able to study for the extra two subjects alone during his A-Level course. For his O-Level, he got 8As and 2Bs. His inspiration came from his disadvantaged background, but that did not dishearten him at all.
“I was raised by a single mother who struggled to put me through school. I spent most of my childhood in Gutu with grandmother who is now late. I always wanted to be the person who is going to uplift my family and break the poverty barrier,” he said.
Mudyiwa also revealed his dream was to become an actuarial scientist, but it can only be achieved if we he gets assistance to further his education.
“My pastor from Christ Embassy changed my life through his teachings about how God can uplift a person to greater heights. At this point I believe that my life is going to change for the better.”
Another genius, Tawanda Zvakada, from Budiriro had his mother in tears of joy after scooping 20 points (Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Accounts). The 19-year-old revealed it was unbelievable when the news broke of his results but he has come to terms with it.
“I worked hard because the journey was not easy. I faced so many challenges and on top of that I also had my head boy duties to perform at my Sandringham School,” he said.
Zvakada, however, revealed that he had to make extra time for his studies during the night in order to strike a healthy balance.
“I took up Accounting when I was in Upper Six after being encouraged by my teachers Mrs Mahaso and Mr Rutanhira who had seen my potential. My friends Tinashe Chikomo, Portia Chiyangwa, Kudzai Tsikira, Terrence Gotora and Pardon Tebe were a great source of inspiration also,” he said.
Zvakado, who scored 9 As and 2Bs at O-Level, said he appreciates all the efforts that has been made by his mother as she single-handedly sent him through school. Since the passing of his father when he was 10 years old, the teen has always felt the urge to make her proud.
Just like any other genius, he had extra-curriculum activities that helped keep him sane.
Zengeza 2 High student Ashley Chivanganye was overjoyed when he collected his A-Level results on Monday and he was thrilled to find out that he had passed with flying colours.
The first born in a family four got 15 points while he was doing a combination of Economics, Mathematics and Accounts.
“I am happy to have passed, but the problem is that I cannot afford to go to university. My parents are unemployed, but so far they have tried their best to ensure I get a good education,” he said. The teen dreams of acquiring a degree in Accounting and eventually run his own business.
“I would like to uplift my family and make them proud of me. It has taken a lot of hard work to be where I am and some of the credit goes to my friends and classmates Clayton Munhu Mudarima, Simbarashe Chaza and Nick Mukwebwa.
“We have been together since our O-Level where we were encouraging each other to work hard. I also want to thank my teacher, Mr Marange, who stuck by me throughout my studies,” he said.
“The City of Gold” is happy to have its own record breaker in Pardington Kafudza. The Jameson High school student came up with 19 points and his combination was Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Further Mathematics.
Kafudza’s story is incredible because, according to his mother, he was so dull in primary school that he was sent to special class. The tables turned when he was in Form Two.
From there he skipped to do his A-Level and the rest is history. Although he has done the inevitable, his is now appealing for a scholarship. Those willing to assist the super kids can contact the following:
