‘Superman’ chases his dreams

opportunities is a waste of time.
Such is the mentality of upcoming teen dancehall sensation Moses Dhliwayo now known as “Superman”. A series of unfortunate events in his life has never disheartened the Domboshava-based teen in his quest to follow his dreams.
His father passed away when he was 10 years old and he was forced to drop out of school before completing Grade Six. His mother has been bedridden since then but now 15, “Superman” is now chasing other dreams.

After the successful release of his debut album, the youngster is getting ready to go back to school.
“I have had it tough from the time my father passed away in 2010. My mother is not well so I have been staying with my aunt who is not financially stable to pay for my fees. I have used the money that I get while selling tomatoes in my neighbourhood to record my songs,” he said.

How his songwriting started is a story like any other. Just like any other teen, “Superman” found music as his private gateaway where he diverts his emotions that come as he tackles life by himself. According to the teen, he always had an appreciation for dancehall music.
He would listen to local artistes like Winky D and Freeman and at times sing along to their music. It was only two years ago that he decided to compose his own songs with the help of instrumentals from existing songs.

Like many other children as they grow up, he was captivated by the cartoon super hero Superman and when it was time to choose his stage name, he chose “Superman”.
“I am aware there is another child celebrity who goes by the name Spiderman. Although I have not met him my name, however, was inspired by the legendary cartoon hero Superman,” he said.
The teen credits the success of his music to his creativity especially when it comes to composing songs.

“I use my imagination to write love songs. I am not in a relationship but knowing that a lot of people can relate to childhood crushes I have managed to write imaginary songs about it,” he said.
The album, “Zverudo”, has outstanding songs like “Ndiri Kutsvaga Musikana”, “Lemba Akandiramba”, “Matsaga” which “Superman” said all are fictional situations. He advised teens to stay away from relationships until they were sure of what they were getting themselves into. He said there was nothing wrong with enjoying love songs.

At the moment “Superman” is excited about his five-track album and according to him, so are his neighbours. A lot of people in his community have given him positive feedback on his music and have encouraged him to keep up the good work.

“My neighbours have been supportive with them buying copies of the album. It boosts my confidence when people take an interest in what I do. Some even come to offer advice on how I can improve my writing and other marketing strategies,” “Superman” said.

The youngster also spoke of his plans to spread his music not only in Domboshava but Harare and later the whole of Zimbabwe.

“I am confident that ‘Zverudo’ can stand its ground among the Zimbabwe dancehall scene so I am working on getting the ‘Godfather of Dancehall’ – Mr Templeman – to listen to it. I am also open to invitations for shows but only those which are suitable for young people,” he said.
