adminZIMBABWEAN volleyball powerhouse Support Unit opened their Confederation of African Volleyball Men’s Club Championship campaign on a losing note, succumbing in straights sets to Setif of Algeria in Sousse, Tunisia yesterday.
Support Unit, making their debut appearance at the continental showpiece, were thumped 0-3 (14-25, 15-25, 12-21) by the North Africa outfit.
The result reflects the Zimbabwean giant’s inexperience at this top level.
However, they will be hoping to bounce back in their coming matches at a tournament which will run until next weekend.
Support Unit are placed in group D containing Prisons of Kenya, KAVC (Uganda), Smouha (Egypt) and Ahly Beni Ghazi (Libya).
The police outfit qualified for this competition after reaching the finals of the Region V tournament in Mozambique last December.
Meanwhile, the officer commanding Support Unit Senior Assistant Commissioner Mekia Tanyanyiwa on Tuesday implored the team to be good ambassadors of both the nation and the Zimbabwe Republic Police.
Speaking at the team’s send off ceremony Tanyanyiwa said: “Compete in a spirit of fair play and respect for others. You are carrying an ambassadorial role for both the country and the organisation. You must be disciplined and you must respect the norms and values of other nations” he said.
