A 63-year-old Nkayi man has been arrested for allegedly raping his niece then aged 10 years in 2010 following a tip-off by a member of the public through the police suggestion box.
Matabeleland North provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Siphiwe Makonese confirmed the incident.
Asst Insp Makonese said the man who was then aged 60 from Chief Nkalakatha in Nkayi allegedly raped the 10-year-old niece but the offence was never reported until the tip-off.

“A man from Chief Nkalakatha is in police custody to answer to charges of rape he allegedly committed in August 2010. The suspect is an uncle to the victim who was 10 at the time of the alleged rape and they stayed together,” she said.

Asst Insp Makonese said sometime in August 2010, the suspect called the complainant into his bedroom hut and when she entered, he locked the door.

“He grabbed and raped her once and told her not to tell anyone. The matter came to light on 17 September after a tip-off through a suggestion box from a member of the public.

Police investigated the matter leading to the arrest of the man,” she said.

Asst Insp Makonese called on members of the public to continue using police suggestion boxes in the fight against crime.
