A 33-YEAR-OLD man was electrocuted in Chakari, Mashonaland West Province, in a suspected attempt to steal copper cables.
The man, whose name is still being withheld, is believed to be part of a group that has been targeting Zesa Holdings equipment in the province.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi warned the public against tempering with Zesa equipment as they risked being electrocuted or arrested.
“A man was electrocuted in Chakari after attempting to cut a live Zesa cable,” he said.
“His body was found near a Zesa transformer with serious burns.
“An electric cable was also found next to the body. Members of the public are warned against tempering with Zesa equipment.”
Zesa Holdings is losing thousands of dollars through theft of copper cables and vandalism of its equipment by criminals countrywide.
Police have arrested some of the criminals, while others are still at large.
In a statement recently, Criminal Investigations Department spokesperson Detective Inspector Portia Chinho said police arrested two Harare men in Chinhoyi for stealing cables and equipment worth US$2 079.
The two were Maxwell Kanjera (29) of Waterfalls and Shepard Katungunde (36) of Marlborough.
