TWO Bulawayo men suspected to be in the business of car smuggling were arreste d in Mberengwa while in possession of two cars.
Meclass Moyo of Nkulumane 12 and Mthandazo Masina of Mpopoma were arrested in Mberengwa after police got a tip-off that they had smuggled a Toyota Hilux Legend 45 and a Landrover Discovery station wagon.
Criminal Investigation Detectives laid an ambush and apprehended the duo after they failed to produce Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) papers used to cross the border.
Moyo and Masina were represented by Leopold Mudisi of Mutendi Mudisi Shumba legal practitioners when they appeared before Zvishavane magistrate Shepherd Mjanja facing charges of possessing property suspected to be stolen or smuggled.
They both pleaded not guilty and were remanded out of custody on $100 bail to 31 July. They were ordered to surrender their passports and report every Friday to the Vehicle Theft Squad in Bulawayo.
The court heard that on 14 July, police received an anonymous letter giving them details of cars being smuggled into the country.
Acting on the given information, they proceeded to Yorks Business Centre in Mberengwa and during investigations arrested Moyo who was driving a Toyota Hilux legend 45 number plates DN 88GVGP.
Masina who was driving a grey Landrover Discovery was also arrested he failed to produce the required clearance papers.
The Toyota Hilux is valued at $30 000 and Landrover Discovery at $20 000.
They both claimed they were tricked at the border by clearing agents.
Detectives were ordered to verify whether these were stolen cars from South Africa and whether they were entered into the Zimra system. . .
