POLICE have arrested a suspect in connection with the alleged murder of a Gwanda man believed to have been a gold dealer whose body was found at Spitzkop suburb on Wednesday morning.
Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Inspector Philisani Ndebele yesterday confirmed the arrest Bhekimpilo Moyo, 40, of Gwanda town who allegedly murdered Petros Sibanda, 41, of 3957 Spitzkop North Extension.

“I confirm that a suspect in the murder of Sibanda was arrested at Phakama business centre on Thursday around 7pm. He is in police custody and is assisting with investigations,” said Insp Ndebele.

He said Moyo was arrested following a tip off by members of the public and expressed gratitude over the cordial relations existing between police and the public.

“We would like to thank members of the public for working together with the police,” he said adding that such good relations should continue.

Sibanda, who is said to have been in the business of buying and selling of gold, is believed to have been attacked while on his way home and was last seen on Tuesday night.

Some small scale miners said their suspicions were that Sibanda could have been ambushed by people who wanted to rob him of some money as he is said to have collected R10, 000 from a business partner in Phakama.

Sibanda died of serious head injuries after a sharp object was used to stab him.
Meanwhile, the suspect, Moyo, has the police to thank after being rescued from a mob who wanted to assault him at Phakama business centre before he was arrested.
