A MOZAMBICAN national who has been allegedly robbing Chivi residents at gunpoint has been arrested, police have confirmed. Acting Masvingo police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nkululeko Nduna said Jeliciano Alexanda Cumbe, 24, of Murombeni Village under Chief Nyambane in Mozambique was arrested last week in Chivi following a tip off from members of the public.
“I can confirm the arrest of a suspected armed robber from Mozambique. He was arrested in connection with cases of robbery some of which occurred in Chivi district. He’s expected to appear in court for robbery charges,” said Asst Insp Nduna without giving details.
In September last year, Cumbe who was in the company of an accomplice who is still at large allegedly approached Makaita Pasayi, 42, of Zinhumwe Village under Chief Nemauzhe at her homestead at around 8PM.
Cumbe produced a pistol while his accomplice produced a knife. He fired a shot and the two suspects demanded cash from Pasayi, but after they discovered that he did not have any, they stole his two cellphones, a Nokia Asha and a Nokia 1280. A report was made to the police who attended to the scene but the suspects had already gone.
In March this year, Cumbe and his accomplice allegedly robbed two Mashava men waiting for transport at a bus stop along Mashava-Masvingo road.
The pair was robbed of cash and two cell phones at gunpoint. Cumbe was arrested at Chivi Growth Point last week following a tip off by the members of the public. His accomplice is on the run.
