A SUSPECTED poacher allegedly fell into a dam and drowned while chasing a kudu in Mangwe District on Friday, police confirmed yesterday.Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Inspector Philisani Ndebele said the incident occurred on Friday at about 4pm.

He identified the man as Patrick Moyo (31) from Kwite Village under Chief Tshitshi’s area in Mangwe.  Insp Ndebele said Moyo was employed as a herdman at Mbowe Farm in Mangwe District.

He said Moyo’s body was discovered the following day by his work mates in the dam, which is situated on the farm.
“Another worker at the farm, Shadreck Moyo left the deceased by the farm kraal and went to collect cattle for penning. On his return an hour later Patrick Moyo had moved from the kraal,” Insp Ndebele said.

He added: “He saw Moyo’s footprints and tracked them up to the nearby dam. The footprints indicated that Moyo was following a kudu.”
Insp Ndebele said Shadreck concluded that his workmate had drowned and alerted other farm workers.

He said: “When Shadreck reached the dam he found Moyo’s dogs standing by the dam but their master was nowhere to be seen except that his footprints indicated that he had gone into the water,” said Insp Ndebele.

“He alerted other farm workers and they returned to inquire on the following morning around 5am. That is when they found the dead kudu floating on top of the water and they also found Patrick Moyo’s body.”

Insp Ndebele said a report was made to the police who retrieved the body. He advised members of the public to desist from entering water bodies especially during the rainy season and urged people to desist from poaching.
