POLICE have arrested a suspected serial thief who was part of a four men gang that has been wreaking havoc in and around Gweru breaking into shops and getting away with groceries. Midlands police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said the gang broke into 44 shops and tuckshops on different occasions and stole grocery items valued at $20 675.
He said the police managed to arrest Trymore Dube (19) of Ascot who was now assisting police with investigations.
“
The suspect, Trymore Dube (19) has assisted police to clear 44 counts of unlawful entry and theft which he and his accomplices committed in and around Gweru.
Trymore who is in police custody was the leader of the four man gang. The other three who are at large are Phumulani Dhlamini, Maketo Zhou and the other one only identified as Kumbi.
“
We arrested Trymore after we attended to a scene in Southdowns. The suspect went there in a hired taxi about a month ago. He, however, managed to flee from the scene, leaving behind a pair of shoes.
The police quizzed the taxi driver until he disclosed the owner of the shoes. Trymore has been on the run since but we recently received information that he was in town. The police conducted their investigations leading to the arrest of the suspect on Monday,” said Insp Mahoko.
Insp Mahoko said the gang has been targeting tuckshops and grocery shops in suburbs like Dalesyford, Riverside, Northlea and Mkoba.
“The gang would hire a taxi to ferry their loot after breaking into a shop. They would sell the loot to members of the public. This is why most of the stolen goods were not recovered. Police only recovered goods worth $513,” said Insp Mahoko.
