A suspected thief was assaulted by five men and died at the Epworth Police Station charge office on Monday.
Emmanuel Musokeri broke into Kelvin Tafira house and the family shouted for help.
Kelvin teamed up with Andrew Kanyemba, 47, Hillary Gumbo, 20, Conold Chitongwe, 19, and Takizawa Chikoore, 18, in assaulting Emmanuel until he lost consciousness. They rushed with him to Epworth Police Station where he died while lodging an unlawful entry case against him.
He was 43.
Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the case.
“Police arrested five men in connection with murder,” said Insp Chakanza.
“Circumstances are that at around 2am, the deceased went to one of the accused’s house and forced the door of his house open with a metal object and gained entry into the house.
“Whilst inside, he stole a 32-inch television, Toshiba laptop, two satchels all valued at US$250 and placed the property at the verandah.
“The deceased was seen and positively identified by passers-by, who alerted accused person who was asleep in the room.
“The deceased ran away and went to his house.
“The accused persons teamed up and went to the deceased’s house.
“They took him back to accused person’s house and they beat him.
“The body was conveyed to Chitungwiza hospital mortuary for postmortem,” said Insp Chakanza.
