A suspected thief who robbed and thoroughly assaulted a couple that works at Glen View 9 Primary School in Harare leading to the death of one of the victims, has appeared in court.
Daniel Shonhai (34) appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Dennis Mangosi last week charged with robbery and murder.
He was advised to approach the High Court for bail.
Prosecutor Mr Thomas Chanakira alleged that on April 4 at around 9:30pm, Shonhai and his accomplices hatched a plan to rob the now deceased Aaron Makawa (58) of Glen View 9 Primary School.
They proceeded to the school where they manhandled complainant Tamson Njanji (71), a security guard, before they assaulted and tied his hands and legs before forcibly taking his Samsung cellphone.
Shonhai and his accomplices then went to Makawa’s house where they forced entry into the house.
They attacked his wife, Elizabeth Chitombo (34) and demanded cash, but she told them that there was no money.
The suspects assaulted her using iron bars, wooden sticks and during that time, Makawa arrived, and was also assaulted while they demanded cash.
Shonhai and his accomplices then broke into Chitombo’s tuckshop within the school premises and stole US$160 cash and ZWL$200 000.
They also stole another cellphone.
Makawa sustained severe injuries. He was taken to Sally Mugabe Central Hospital where he succumbed to the injuries.
