Suspended Chitungwiza town clerk Dr George Makunde has finally been relieved of his duties following a protracted legal battle.

Dr Makunde had been on suspension since 2019, on allegations of gross incompetence.

He finally appeared before an independent tribunal which recommended his dismissal and was fired by the local authority last year after council accepted the recommendation, although that decision still needed the final agreement of the Local Government Board.

Now the board has endorsed his firing.

The letter from Local Government Board chairperson Mr Stephen Chakaipa read by acting mayor Kiven Mutimbanyoka during a recent full council meeting said the parent Local Government and Public Works Ministry confirmed the expulsion of Dr Makunde from Chitungwiza Municipality.

“The Local Government Board met on 10 September 2022 and deliberated on Council application to discharge the town clerk,” the letter read.

“The board notes that there are irreparable and irreconcilable differences in relationships with the employee and not for the first time.

“Accordingly, the Board through resolution numberLGB010/2022, approves separation of Dr George Makunde and Chitungwiza Municipality.”

Dr Evangelista Machona has been acting town clerk for the municipality.

Meanwhile, Chitungwiza council has now appointed a substantive chamber secretary, Mr Japson Nemuseso, after going through interviews at the Local Government Board.

Mr Chakaipa said the board was satisfied that Mr Nemuseso was the best candidate to get the job because of his distinct edge above the other candidates in terms of experience and exposure.
